Two things matter first: getting certified death certificates, and, if money is short, reaching the burial assistance program in the county where the death happened. Pick your county below for exact contacts.
The paperwork
Certified copies come from the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, Bureau of Vital Records and Health Statistics (official site).
Each certified copy or search is $16 and there is no shipping charge for regular US mail. Most orders take 1 to 3 weeks once they reach the office, while RUSH orders take 5 to 7 days and cost $10 extra per record, with expedited UPS shipping around $21. Mail your signed request to Idaho Vital Records, PO Box 83720, Boise, ID 83720-0036, enclosing the fee and a copy of BOTH SIDES of your signed photo ID. Online orders go through VitalChek with additional charges.
Planning ahead
If someone you love is aging or ill, the cheapest protection your family can get is a power of attorney, and it must happen while they can still sign. We cover Idaho's exact rules and official forms.
